Springing Forward

Sometimes it seems as if winter is a trick of the mind. While we drag ourselves through the dark days of winter, it feels as if it will go on forever. But once we ‘spring forward,’ it’s a pleasant surprise that we’re getting ready for the fruit of summer yet again. And it is exactly that time. Seeds are being planted in the greenhouse, seedlings are popping out of their cozy cells, and our high tunnels are being pushed and prodded back into their fluffy spring soil.
Out in the fields there is motion too. This is the time when the garlic starts to send its first green tendrils to the sky, the strawberry plants start to slowly emerge from hibernation, and overwintered carrots get a surge of much needed sun. From the work we did in the fall, here come old friends.
And that is another part of the expectation and excitement we anticipate. You – our old friends – will return to the farm after a long winter’s nap. Soon, children will wander the Learning Garden again, CSA subscribers will poke through our U-pick to find hidden peas, and laughter and learning will echo from the beehives, to our barns, to the trees. So, welcome Spring. And we look forward to seeing all of YOU at the farm soon.
