2018 CSA Newsletter – Week #18

Notes from the Farm – 10/8/18:

There are just three weeks remaining in our 2018 CSA.  Though the CSA will come to a close at the end of October, we will still make some produce available in November and December for purchase at the farm (details coming soon) and at the City Seed farmers’ markets in New Haven on Saturdays at Wooster Square and Sundays at Edgewood Park.  We’ll also be sending out a CSA survey shortly, and we’ll have 2019 CSA sign ups open next week exclusively for you, our current subscribers.

After continual nurturing, which began in March in our greenhouse, and a continual  heavy harvest starting in late July, we’ll pick the final red, orange and green tomatoes this week. (‘Carnival’ acorn squash, left).  With the final picking complete we’ll then pull out the stakes, remove the strings, mow down the plants, roll up the fabric and sow cover crops to protect and replenish the soil in preparation for a different crop to planted and harvested in that space in 2019.  We’ll continue to bring in eggplants this week, we’ll have our first fall of harvest of arugula and/or salad mix, plus more fall squash, potatoes, garlic, radishes, carrots and lettuce.

Best,
Farmer Steve and our Farmers: Alyssa, Dan, Kayla, Chloe, Becca, Amy, Dan, Sydney
