2018 CSA Newsletter – Week #12

Notes from the Farm – 8/27/18:

We spent some of last week harvesting our potatoes and are happy to share  some with everyone this week.  I love having fresh potatoes at this time so that they can be grilled along with some plum tomatoes, tossed in olive oil, salt, pepper and some fresh herbs.  A perfect late summer dish.   Indeed, our tomato and basil harvest happily continues, and we’ll enjoy them as long as we can in the season.  Eggplants and peppers are still coming in slowly, while our final cucumber plantings are producing new fruit, and some varieties of greens make it through the summer heat.  We’ll harvest dandelion greens for you this week, which can be put to great use in pasta/tomato dishes, and in fresh green salads.  We’ll harvest tulsi as well (also known as holy basil), which is commonly used in India and South Asia for tea, soups and stir fries.  We see it here in the states most commonly in herbal tea mixes, and it does make a fantastic fresh or dried tea (both hot and cold).  I know many of you have been using it regularly as we planted some in the U-Pick area, but for those who haven’t yet, definitely give it a try.  Keep the tulsi it in a vase or jar of water like a bouquet of flowers on your table to enjoy the beauty and fragrance, then simply boil water for tea to try it out, and let us know what you think.

The U-Pick area will be closed this week as high heat returns and picking options are limited.  The cherry tomatoes are fading fast so we will pick what is left of them and include them in the tomato distribution.  We’ll also harvest what remains of the green beans.  We’ve planted one more set of green beans along with some snap and snow peas we hope to have ready in the U-Pick for later this season.

Best,
Farmer Steve and our Farmers: Alyssa, Dan, Kayla, Chloe, Becca, Amy, Dan
